Im new here and from reading the post, it seems that most of you are from the east coast. Maybe not, but from a different region than I live in

I thought it might be neat to throw around some of the names that we use for common items to the trade. I would guess that there might be a difference in the names we use depending on where we live.

So....Anyone have a Battleship? Pretty common item.

Ok I met a guy from New Jersey that called it an "F Hook" I had no idea what he was asking for. But after we both realized what the other was talking about it became real clear.

A Battleship is a: ( heh, see I don't any have a clue what the actual name is)A thin metal clip used in set of 2, to secure a metal cut in box in place. They come in oddly enough in the shape of a "F" Turn them on their side and they look like a ship, thus "Battleship"...Well sort of

They're called "Madison Clips" where I am - (no idea why) Long Island, NY. I think the "official" name is box supports. I guess they've been around for awhile. During a remodel I came across some that an old timer had made from a coffee can many years ago.

I have always been curious to why a "Hickey" is called a "Hickey" [the ones for bending pipe, that is ] Is it shortened from "Do-Hickey" maybe?? Like when the lighting for Mines and streets went from Gas lamps to Electric lamps. Maybe someone made the first Hickey to bend pipe and a co-worker asked if they could use that "Do-Hickey"...

Another is " Go get a Jake 90" [for flex]. Who is Jake?

My Father showed me a Battleship when I was around age 10. I could see why it was called a Battleship, but how it was used did not make any sense - until I got to install a cut in box with Battleships to support it, as opposed to the typical "Tiger Grip" cut in box.

This thread is cool! I'll try to post a few others as they arrise. I know that there is probably 25 simple ones right in front of me, but only do the names become somewhat odd when someone not in the trade hears the name and asks "What the heck is it called that for??".

I would call that a "corner ell" (for elbow I guess)

In my area we usually call them hold-its. It could be some sort of a name brand for box support????

Noodle = Nuetral .....jsut be carful with that one in mixed company....

hold-its = madisons, or battleships...

I suppose the guys at the supply counter's have hear 'em all....

A contractor I once worked for had every catalogue number memorized and that's what he called the materials!

"Hand me that PT70-M" (barrell crimp)
"Give me that CXW" (2-1/8" Deep 1 Gang metal box)
"We need a box of 5320's " (duplex receptacles)

Drove me nuts for awhile, but now I see why you tend to remember them that way after a few years!
