According to the Art 100 definition,
It would be compliant to install a JB-secured- above or adjacent to an old work recessed light,in a residential setting.

I ask Because I don't like the idea.However, for this most recent Kitchen remodel that I am undertaking,It appears to be the best option in order to keep with in the owners budget.

This unit is an open concept 1970's home,with a 2nd floor added in the '90s.So you can imagine the switching scheme.
Service on the other end of the house.

With proper documentation located at the panel,would you think less of me for doing this?
Am I correct in my interpretation? code compliant?

Think about the J box in an old work can light and use that for guidance. The operative words are 'building finish". If this is something an electrician would be comfortable removing for access I think it is accessible.

Sorta one of the grey areas again. Based on the definition, with no damage/removal of building finish, it is IMHO, NEC compliant.

From a guy with tools point of view......he finds note of splice point/box location, finds the right recess can & drops out the interior. He eyeballs the 4x box, mutters a few words & proceeds. He has to work by 'feel' or 'brielle' with one hand.

As an AHJ, that is an 'acceptable' scenario; do I allow it? Short answer, yes. However, most guys work the 'splice' into the fixture wiring compartment/box.

John, your option -of in the cans j-box- is my 1st choice.

Not so worried about 'box fill',as I am a buried junction.

Hidden box makes my skin crawl. just weighing my options and looking for moral support.

I have seen too many horror shows from undocumented buried boxes.

That begs the question, would you rather have an overstuffed box or a box up in the black hole with lots of room.

A better question. Would you allow the 1900 box on a whip?

My scenario includes a location currently with 2 three-ways.
Suddenly in the middle of a more open kitchen.
Fortunately,I believe, from a walk thru yesterday that I may need only extend 1 3 way switch setup.
The rec. are near or at the end of the ckt.,so re-feeding from the basement may not be too bad.

By the way- This is my 1st job with an official complaint of the additional cost for an AFCI breaker- due to 'modification of a ckt."
Can't wait for the first panel upgrade due to fuses for 1 additional rec.

Given the choices of over box fill, box in the black hole, or a floating box, maybe we should start a poll

From a safe work view, the floating box would be the best choice, as opposed to working with one hand, on wiring you can't see.

Maybe include the AMP/Tyco Enerflex device in the poll?

As usual I am late but we have in the past installed a splice box above/near a recess light. We would also leave notes inside the can telling someone else that there is a splice box above/behind the recess light.
