Article 314.16.C.2 states that a conduit body "shall be supported in a rigid and secure manner" yet 314.22.E says you can hang a condulet from an EMT pipe run. I don't believe that can be considered a "rigid and secure manner" Ideas welcome

My Idea is your thinking about it to much. [Linked Image]

If you place EMT supports close to both sides of the conduit body it will be rigidly supported.

But the code allows up to 3' on either side of the condulet. It's not 12" any more

Yes the code allows 36" but along with the EMT support requirements we must follow 314.16(C)(2).

It is a judgment call as to if 36" is close enough to meet 314.16(C)(2).

I am likely to support both sides of an LB within 12" on smaller EMT, on 4" EMT 36" will normally do fine.

I agree! How do you feel about drilling the condulet and mounting it to strut?

I have seen that done, and I asked the magic question......'where does the mfg instructions say that is OK??'

Haven't seen an answer yet.

I'm an electrical inspector at Lawrence Livermore Lab in Livermore CA.
I am also a contractor B & C10

I have drilled a few conduit bodies in some instances where I wanted to add support. Mostly due to the pulling that I would be doing later.

I have also drilled drain holes in conduit bodies.

We are required to 'arrange to drain'.

IMO a small hole in conduit body can do this.

Is it it A-OK with the manufactures?

I doubt they say so publicly.

But come on we drill enclosures all the time for mounting or entering. [Linked Image]

I really know what you mean; been there, done that.

I like the idea of rigidly mounting condolets too. I agree it is not necessary but it does give a lot more rigid installation than the one holers when a future user starts doing chin ups from the raceways.
