I just heard that 400W and up high bay fixtures now require lenses. No open bulb fixtures allowed.

Anyone read this yet?

It depends.

Metal halide or mercury vapor luminaires in a multi-purpose type occupancy (such as a gym) need a lens. Metal halide fixtures need a lens always, unless they are a "type O" or a "type PAR".

At least, thats what I remember reading. Anyone else?

Here’s some NEMA stuff that supports Ryan’s comments about MH use. http://nema.org/stds/LSD25.cfm#download http://nema.org/stds/LSD31.cfm#download http://nema.org/stds/LSD24.cfm#download

Bjarney, thanks for the links.

I learned some things about MH lights with that info.

Now I have to go find what these lamps look like. Any links to pics of the lamps themselves handy in your arsenol?

Another nice resource for this is the ROp and ROC.

Regarding the lamps, they have a dimple in the end of the lamp, and the base is right between medium and mogul, making them compatible only with a type "O" fixture.
