I had inspector tell me he wants a label on the front of the panel for 120/208 that say's
A phase black
B phase red
C phase blue
for 277/480
A phase brown
B phase orange
C phase yellow
He said this is a new code but the reference he gave didn't state this.

Is this something new? I always thought the color code was sort of a rule of thumb that all electricians knew the color code although I have seen some that use black, red, blue for everything.

Except for white, green, and gray, coloring is purely arbitrary. If anyone knows differently, please advise.

The colors you choose are up to you, the NEC would allow purple, pink and brown for 480 volt.

However in some instances the NEC does require that the colors you choose to be listed at the panel.

In the 2002 NEC it applied only to multiwire branch circuits.


Now in the 2005 it applies to all circuits in some buildings.

Look at 2005 - 210.5(C)

But in the 2005 code there is no requirement that each phase have a different color...only each system.

On a 4-wire, delta-connected system where the midpoint of one phase winding is grounded to supply lighting and similar loads, the conductor or busbar having the higher phase voltage to ground shall be durably and permanently marked by an outer finish that is orange in color or by other effective means. Such identification shall be placed at each point on the system where a connection is made if the grounded conductor is also present.
