Hello to all.
we have a customer the has a resort community. They have an 8 unit, 2 story rental units. 4 units on the first level and 4 units on the 2nd level It is like a hotel style setup. The building has an old fire system in it that is not working correctly and the owner wants us to redo the fire system. If i am not mistaken, don't i need to have interconnected smoke detectors, and some type of sound annuceation, and it need to be monitored. The owner just wants us to install line voltage smokes in the bedrooms and not have a big system. I can not find the code in the IBC book. can some help me
thanks
sam

#1 Check your state fire prevention web site.
This will answer most questions.
#2- Check with the local fire prevention officer, this will clear up the rest.

This is your only option, fire prevention is at a local level.

2003 IBC covers this in Chapter 9. Look at 907.2.8 through 907.2.10. Also check out NFPA 72.

Bear in mind that there is a difference between smoke alarms and smoke detectors. Smoke detectors are part of an alarm system, wheras smoke alarms are stand alone units that can be interconnected as required, and that have both detection and alarm function. Smoke detectors cannot make any noise, there must be separate alarm appliances, and a central control panel.

IBC only covers new construction and if adopted by the local juristdiction. Local ordinance will tell you what is needed based on the scope of work.
