I had an e-mail from a guy just now that said just that in the subject line.
I would counter that with you are a long time dead my friend.
I got rid of the e-mail but if any of you are stupid enough to send me an e-mail like that, make sure you beat yourself stupid afterwards.
Because if you don't, I will.

Unreal he was most likely holding a light for someone else.We all have to do live work from time to time.I never brag about or think I am tough or any bs like that.I also never really lokk forward to it.Oh well he is most likely new in the trade.Everbody's got to be green once.I remember the first I put a fuse in a pad mounted x-frmr the exact moment I started to slide the fuse in a squirel bucked phases in the pot head right above me.Talk about bad timing.

I like to say "There are BOLD electricians, and there are OLD electricians....but there are no OLD BOLD electricians!

I really think there is no room in the trade for those who "think with their hormones." I don't want those kind of "men" on my jobsite; I want responsible adults.

I once got a letter that had but one word :"Wuss." Now, I've received many letters where the author forgot to sign his message....but this was the first where he signed, but forgot to include his message!

I'd like to say, we've all had to do "Live Work" (bare handed) at some time or another. I've never worked anything above 480 live (bare handed)and would flat refuse to do so.
But, there are situations that arise such as emergencey's that require this. I do not like it! I do not condone it! I would never ask anyone else to do it!

Saying someone should be beat stupid is tuff talk from a keyboard, because I'd wager even you have done this.

Rob

I don't think the point was that he worked 480 live,I'd bet most or many of us have. I think the problem was that he for some reason thinks he's a badass for doing so. Im my opinion he's a child and has no business in this field if hes a Jman or if hes a young apprentice he needs to mature.

Want to be a badass and impress me, work on what lineman work on energized.

Hey Surfing, Im south of you in Martin County.

Someday his gravestone might read

"I was a man, who worked on 480 live"

When you don't respect electricity, it comes and gets you...

What an idiot!!! [Linked Image]

Sorry that some Joker sent you a message like that, Mike (Trumpy).

I bet your Girlfriend must have heard you yelling from across the House when you got that one in the Inbox!

What a Bozo!

It's baloney like that, spouting from Clowns like that dude, which makes it difficult to keep newcomers to the trade safe!

Just wonder what Hobbies a guy like this would have...

"I am a MAN!!!, I Circumcise Badgers for a Hobby!!!

Please excuse the above noted hobby activity - just the first thing coming to mind (kind of my default sarcastic remark - it gets a few laughs though!).

No skin off my nose.
If people want to send me e-mails like that, they'll get the standard reply:
Big Deal!, I can't help but feel that there is a village somewhere missing it's idiot.

This is one of the stranger ones as of late.
I don't recognise the e-mail address, but I'm pretty sure they aren't a member here.

Yep, we had a joker like that that used to work at the company I do... Thought he was going to " show off" by working inside a 400A 600V splitter live, even though the boss had made arrangements to shut it all down..
To make a long story short ( no pun or anything intended) He DID short out one phase to ground, welded his ratchet to the splitter itself and then tried to disguise the big flare mark... The bugger is lucky the fuses opened quick and the arc didn't burn him... Needless to say he isn't an employee where I work anymore!

In the words of an old Frankie Laine song:

"I'm gonna live, 'til I die."

I don't doubt we've all worked on live circuits of various types at one time or another. It doesn't make one a man to do so or a wimp not to do so, because so much depends upon the situation and the care one takes.

I can't help feeling that bragging about it in that way rather suggests a somewhat cavalier, complacent attitude to live work. And complacency leads to accidents.

Guys,
You just can't save some people from themselves.
Even here, 230V across the ribs is enough to either wake you up or it will shut your eyes for you (permanently, in some cases).
I don't need clowns like this guy sending me e-mails, I get enough rubbish as it is from people trying to sell me Viagra or telling me which stocks they think are "hot!".
All of which are filed appropriately in the Trash box of Mozilla T-Bird.

Im a man I work live !!??

Why do some people think there is still a need for caveman bravado....

People have fought for years to get in safe working practices, to make the work place as safe as possible and limit the risks to a level where they are covered and the risks are virtually non existant. To go and try to defeat this and give in and work live is to dump all these years of working for a better and safer working place.

There is no need to work live - No need at all - power supplies to 95% of the population can go off without any real loss other than inconvenience. Would I put my life on the line and work live just so some place never went into darkness ? Would I as hell.... Sorry mate there will be a loss of power here till i do this work and then you will be back to normal. Cant be helped its just going to go that way for now.

The most dangerous part of our job should be the drive in to work - not the actual work itself. Why take those risks ?

For my safety, I always shut down breakers when I work on anything (I only bother with resi). if I'm in a box I killed but feel a bite, I kill everything around that box (surrounding rooms' circuits). My theory is that, at least where you can, it's better to turn off more than you need than not enough. To a point, there is no such thing as too much safety.

Guys,
A lot of our gear here, is enclosed in either ABS or PVC plastics.
The conduit is usually rigid PVC.
However, in the US, boxes, conduits and the like are all metallic.
Grab a wire, while leaning (off of a ladder) against a metal enclosure with bare fore-arms and no gloves and see what happens.
Sure the fault current will not kill you, but you will end up with nasty internal burns to your arm, probably even a flash burn to the face after you (if you can let go) heave the wire back into the box.
Don't take any chances guys.
Work dead, don't be dead.

Some people get confused. Testing and Troubleshooting a live circuit is way different then actually working on a live circuit. I might pull a control wire (up to 120VAC) on a live circuit, but when I need to do something on a power circuit, I alwayz kill the power...............

Except there's a big difference between a lineman and a "cowboy".

The lineman KNOWS the dangers of working live. He has - or should have - PPE (masks, gloves, a suit of some kind I assume). The tools are rated for that kind of work.

The cowboy, on the other hand, is probably working in jeans and a teeshirt, barehanded with cheap tools from the dollar store....and he thinks he's "The Man".
