Electrical safety at home, work and school

Accidents involving electricity cost 280 on-the-job workers their lives in 2000, and their employers millions of dollars in lost productivity, litigation and higher health insurance and workers' compensation costs.

At home, one person dies and nearly four are injured every day in fires caused by faulty wiring.

To combat these appalling numbers, the Electrical Safety Foundation International has declared May National Electrical Safety Month.

The association has put together a kit of posters, checklists, publicity campaigns and other ideas for raising awareness about the dangers of working with and near electricity.

"Technology can only do so much to keep us safe," ESFI's Executive Director Michael Clendenin said. "The key element to electrical safety is awareness.

If people are aware of the hazards present around them at home, at work at school and at play, and of the many simple ways they can keep safe, those statistics can be dramatically reduced."
