Hi,
had a job last week removing two large motors at a Gen. station..

(1) 8000hp @4,160v Forced Draft fan
(!) 9000 hp @13.8Kv... Induced Draft fan

the smaller one..Westinghouse.... was in service for a long time, mebbe >15 years, and was terminated like the thing should be using a higher voltage...ya know cones, boots, mica tape, EPDM ??

the larger one ...from somewhere in Brazil.....was in service for only two years..but it was termed like I would have thought the smaller one would have been....just some 130C and vinyl..granted the P-head is tall enough to stand in !!

but someone there spec's these things and the lugs just looked opposite

the things will be back from rewind next week and the Eng. for the POCO wants both terminated with new hot kitsfor the higher voltage

.. OK ..fine..whatever , you're the boss

I didn't ask why the things were hooked up this way in the first place
It just looked really weird...maybe they have some huge spikes
any thoughts
I'm very suspicious... [Linked Image]

also, ask me about the LOTO procedure..go ahead...it aint nuthin like some of you may think
Do you have any pictures? A Hand taped termination is made out of a little semi con and building up a stress cone out of 130C. From your description it doesn't sound like it was properly done. A 15KV hand taped term should be 20 to 27 inches long depending on the specs.
I will e-mail my buddy, he took some with his camera phone....might get' em later today..the games are on and he's probably stuffed his face and taking a nap already...

the feeder cables ( all 15Kv) were made up the same for both motors
.just the bolted connections at the motor lugs were kinda funky looking.....
Ok, I'll bite.

How does the LOTO procedure work out there?
it's just a paper "HOLD" tag on a string and it gets placed ONLY by plant personnel...no contractor / personal locks are allowed,

in fact no locks are used,

but the tag does contain the equipment info in the POCOs unique alphanumerical gibberish...

i.e. the 9000hp is
NU12 ID.....EHG000127....EHJ000135....MH51.....EHM00236.....,not exactly, but you get the idea.
plus, there were about eleven HOLD tags for each motor...kinda creeps you out when you got a13,ooov cable in your hands

You must be jokeing. My life=my lock. Thats just plain nuts. My stomach turned over just reading that.
Wow, that is kinda scary. The only thing between you and getting shocked is a piece of string and paper.

I guess if everyone out there knows how it works it is kinda safe, but still scary.
It does take some getting used to !

but those are the rules.
I would think OSHA would have a cow if they knew.

I like that, "My life = my lock".
well I don't think a cow would too happy if OSHA was involved....

the facility is a POCO and the "HOLD"system has been used at least since 1988 when I first set foot in the place...I don't care for it sometimes, but ..it's their house....
