I am working in a meat packing wharehouse It has a delta high leg service. 400 amp w/ two seperate 200 amp panels. The customer wants another 200 amp panel (mostly 120v loads) In your experiance would the power company allow a single phase additional panel (not using the high leg)The original service loaded.

one thing about delta service some poco will allow to increase the trasformer " can " capaity but please do check with the POCO first before you add more load on this set up

some time they will only increase to match the exsting main breaker rating only nothing more

this what my poco told me with exsting delta services they will only increase to match main breaker rating if more than the main breaker rating .

My POCO will ask you to convert to wye system after pretty big upgrading on the system or get a POCO engineer approvel for specal useage

so just check with them ahead of time so they can have time to prepared to change the cans or on ground transformer box as needed

Would the owner consider springing for a delta to wye 120/208V 75 KVA dry type transformer to feed this new panel?

If there is no need for a special K rated or copper winding transformer the cost would not be to bad.

Thanks for the response but how would that fix the load problem? Do you mean a new trans off the existing service or a trans off a new service?

If you are going to increase the load, and the present service is loaded to capacity, you'll simply have to replace the service with one that has enough capacity.

Overloading a circuit is overloading a circuit, be it a 15Amp branch circuit, or a 4000 amp service.

Jersey, you didn't mention there was a load problem, the number of panels or face value of OCPD's wouldn't change the actual load.

With that said, if there is infact a load problem, I agree with Marc and Electure, you will need to contact the POCO and most likely provide a new service.

OK, first thing you need is a load calc. Then you have to discuss your situation with the POCO. JCP&L, or PSE&G

Or.... Contact your POCO, and get a second set of tranformers, and second service.

The second one in 208 wye... Not an uncommon request in my area.
