I had never heard of using a gas detector to detect faults on transformer. He must be using it to detect long-term events, such as arcing inside the tap changer of the transformer transformer. I would think a high speed differential relay would be a better choice to protect a transformer from internal fault current events. I used to run the oil analysis program for about 100 transformers in a pulp and paper mill. One thing we always took action on was a transformer that was wet, ie had a hydrogen present in that 200 ppm range. I saw several units that failed above that range. Good info, I want to look it over some more when I have time.
GcEE, You would also have to think of the Hysteresis current of that relay coil upsetting the response time, as in a slight delay. It's a good call on the Gas Detector.
