I have a customer with a 208V 15KW 1 0r 3phase cook top. He has a 3ph 4wire 240v service can this 208v cooktop be connected to a 240v service panel. thanks for any repleys.

No, the label says 208. Supplying it with 240 would be a violation.

I really thought that too. but its nice to get a second opinion. He will just have to put it up for sale and hope he gets his money back. You know how those great deals are you cant pass theme up.
What do you think aboat it when the acual power is 248V between phases. this is commmon here in this area. and 124v to ground.

Bossman, you could install buck/boost transformers to provide 208 for the cook top nameplate.

I just wish people would ask or that they know what there buying before they call and say come hook this up.
Ive actually have seen the same 3phase lake pump 3 times, 2 times I came out to two differant homes to hook up sprinkler pump and the 3rd time i saw the pump in the local pawn shop. I wonder how many people have bought that same pump.

What brand was the cooktop and how old? Was it one of those on little legs that sits on the tabletop?

A cooktop that is rated 208V, and can be wired for 1 phase? That sounds like a strange animal. You might want to double check how it is actually wired just in case it can be adapted. If wired for single phase, what would its voltage requirement be, then?

I have seen some cooktops that say they work on either 208V or 240V, and list the same kW rating either way. I'm not sure how they accomplish that, but I suspect they may be running each element on 120 volts and don't really care what the phase angle is between the phases.

capt al: do you have a wiring diagram for 240V 4-wire delta (the customer probably does not have 240Y/139) via buck/boost to get 208V three phase? Or were you suggesting doing this only in single phase?

pdh I think your right about the heaters on the cooktop you have to rearrange it and it should work I remember having to do that not too long ago for a customer.

They could be for condos/apartments that are supplied with a 208-y supply, where each unit get 2/3 phases, or for installation in office kitchens.

IMO the cost of a cheap 208V cooktop plus the buck transformer of adeqate size, would probably cost as much as a proper 240V cooktop.
