if u completely rewire an older house are arc faults required to be installed or is that just on new houses built since 2002?

In Ma when you completely rewire an older home. It must be brought up to current code. AFCI protection is required. I just completed a 1920 home for a friend.

I don't think I would agree that extending an existing circuit by adding a receptacle would require an afci to be installed.

How else can you economically provide a code compliant installation on the circuit extension, without providing protection on the entire branch circuit?
