Cindy, contractor license renewel is every other year for $300(if paid on time). On top of this fee are bond fees, city business license fees, business insurance(optional), vehicle license/registration fees,... Here is a link to Ca's License Board fees. http://www.cslb.ca.gov/applicants/blueprint.asp#10

no way... 300% ? is that on top of the thousand or so per year? you guys should revolt! i'm pretty sure my car is only $35 or something every 2 or 3 years..... what do you pay per year for a basic car like a $7000 honda whatsit? guess i should keep this electrically oriented... so what do you pay for registering and licnesing a $7000 electric car? ;-)

Cindy, 94 Chevy 3/4 ton P/U was $212 last year. All P/Us are considered "commercial vehicles" and there is a "weight fee" on top of license and registration. 69 El Camino(considered a P/U) is $66 this year. These fees are yearly and what gets me is, a large chunk of this money goes to the State's General Fund. It should all go towards road repairs and transportation issues.

ok, $66 sounds a lot better than 1000... but 212 still seems like a lot... i guess they get us in property taxes.. my dads was 4000 this year... the good news for people like me is that if you dont make any money then they cant take it from you
thanks

$212 is alittle more than Maine but not much. I think I paid over 500 the first time I registered my present PU in 2000. Can't wait to pay it again on a new truck in the fall. Like Ca., Maine puts it into the general fund also so I can give my money to bureaucrats and folks who don't want to work [Linked Image]

If your question is do we pay WAY to much for EVERYTHING here in Cali, then the answer is YES.

Just by way of comparison, here's a quick outline of what it costs in Britain (converted to U.S. dollars at current exchange rate).

New vehicles pay a one-off registration fee of $41. There used to be a new vehicle tax of either 5 or 10% of purchase price -- Not sure on this one as I've never bought a brand new vehicle! New cars and trucks would also have VAT (sales tax) applied at 17.5%, although this would be reclaimable if purchased solely for business use.

We have a road license which at the moment is $270 per year for most vehicles, less for small (very small) engines. Vehicles registered since 2001 follow a complex new schedule of fees which are based on CO2 emissions. Rates are here (£1.00 = U.S. $1.65):
http://www.dvla.gov.uk/vehicles/taxation.htm

The good news is that we have no property taxes on vehicles, and if you buy a used vehicle there are no transfer or re-registration fees. [Linked Image]

The bad news is that thanks to exorbitant tax rates gas costs $4.75 per gallon. [Linked Image]
