Both of those pictures are of the same 6 year old, Marilyn. She tells everybody that she curled her hair by sticking her stubby screwdriver in a hot outlet(she really got a perm). She tells me she wants to be an electrician when she grows up. I tell her I haven't decided what I want to be when I grow up. I'm not even sure I want to grow up. I'm having too much fun!!!!
This is me. Get your darts ready.

Cindy,
Actually, I thought about Flags under the Names so that we could keep track of where everyone is from. But it's a moot point anyway right now because this is basically off-the-shelf software and doesn't have a thumbnail capability. There was a hack out there that would do the Flag thing, but it wouldn't go with this version.
But, bottom line is we should all be able to treat each other right without the visual aid anyway.

Greetings!!!
My name is Ryan Jackson, I am a combination inspector for Draper city, Utah. I am 25 years old and have a wife of four years, a three year old daughter and a 4 month old son. I am currently certified as a commercial building, electrical, plumbing and mechanical inspector, also a residential building, electrical, plumbing and mechanical inspector, and a building plans examiner, all through ICBO/ICC. I plan to be certified as an electrical plans examiner in a few weeks. I started as a residentail framer when I was 15 years old began doing commercial electrical work when I was 18 and could be legally licensed by the state.
I am currently on the board of directors for the Utah chapter of IAEI.
My hobbies include brewing beer and mead, and practicing full contact Kung fu.
If anyone out there needs a building code question answered you could probably do worse, so send me an E-mail and I'll try to help you out with it.
Heres me doing what inspectors in my area do best!

what is mead. and how does anyone get to be an inspector of so many things at such an age. i have 25 years in electrical and wouldnt even consider being an inspector. lol.
Hello targetshooter. To answer your questions...mead is a drink made mostly of honey (15lbs for 5 gallons) that is similar to champagne and yeilds about 18% alcohol. Tasty stuff, but you have to be careful with it! Mead has been brewed for nearly 7,000 years. As for your other question...Take the test and show competence. I currently hold 6 certifications from ICC/ICBO. At such a young age? I started running commercial electrical installations when I was 20. Age has absolutley nothing to do with it, except for credibility, as you have just displayed. Why would you not consider being an inspector?
[This message has been edited by Ryan_J (edited 08-21-2003).]
Hello Ryan, welcome to the forum.
Roger
Ryan,
Welcome aboard!
Feel free to share whatever expertise you have right here. Although primarily focused on Electrical topics, there is a lot that many of us need to know about other codes to get things done right.
Bill
Roger and Bill: Thank you both very much. I am sure, just like in the other forums, that you will help me much more than I help you. Thanks again.
i forgot to say congratulations. those are accomplishments to be proud of. mead sounds tasty.
i guess i always thought inspectors were required to have so many years of hands-on experience in their field.
i am certified unlimited in electrical but i i dont think i have the temperment to be an effective inspector. i believe i'm better suited for contracting.
Welcome aboard Ryan.
Mead was quite a popular drink in England in times past. I understand it's also the original of our word
honeymoon.
Apparently in ancient times in some far-off country it was the custom for the bride's father to supply the groom with mead for a month after the wedding, hence the "honey month" or "honeymoon."
Brewing beer and mead in Utah is quite an accomplishment in and of itself!
I lived in Provo in the early '70s, and it was a bold thing just to brew a cup of coffee...S
Ryan_J:
Welcome aboard!
electure:
Is that because of the elevation? Gives a whole new meaning to a bubble bath.
Gentlemen, thanks again for your warm responses. Paul: You are correct about the word "honeymoon". I believe that the thoughts were that upon marriage a couple would be given mead in the hopes of birthing a son. Nine months later, which was known to this particular culture (I don't remeber which, assyrians maybe) as a moon cycle.
Electure: You don't need to tell me, I'll tell you!!! Actually Salt Lake is a little more liberal than Provo. Thanks again.

Ryan,
Welcome to ECN, mate!.
Good to have you along.
Paul, Mead used to be drank a lot in the UK, back in the Middle Ages, didn't it?.
Yep -- It seems to be mentioned as a popular drink quite widely in many of the classics, Shakespeare, Chaucer, etc.
Ryan,
Nice to have you on the board. It is also good to have someone with other experience beside electrical work. I have a couple of questions for you. Which building code does your state follow? Here in NJ we just went to the International Residential Building Code.(IRBC) We use to use BOCA or CABO, however now under the IRBC, there is no limit to garages. Under BOCA the limit was set at 4 garages in a residental dwelling. Under the new code, it can allow more than 4 and I don't feel that this code is very safe. Any thoughts?
Um, if you can walk me through this, I'll put in a pic too! <smiles for the camera>
lil suzi,
Send me your picture via email, I'd be happy to post it here. (anyone else too!)
Bill@Electrical-Contractor.net Bill
Hello Harold. We were one of the first states to adopt the international family of codes, and yes, we also use the international residential code. As far as garages go, I'm not sure I follow you 100%. Are you talking about 4 garages on one lot/property? If so, you are right, the IRC doesn't care how many garages you have. Your local planning/zoning department will care, however. As far as safety goes, I don't see any hazards, assuming that the code is followed. We came from Uniform Building Code land, and used to require a fire rated seperation between the garage and living space, if attatched to each other, with a hour one wall. This is no longer a requirement. My e-mail address is Ryan@draper.ut.us Feel free to e-mail me any code questions you might have and I'll do my best to help you out with them
Lil suzi,
Welcome to ECN!,
Good to have you along.
ThinkGood,
No, it's not the elevation (although when you open container vacuum packed at a lower elevation you must be careful that the contents don't blow out all over the place.)
It's the climate...the religious climate. Alcohol, tobacco, caffeine, etc. are frowned upon in a big way...S

A little thread jack here, how far would you guys need to go in your area for a coffee shop.
I have 3 shops from two of the areas big chains within 1 mile of my house.
As I drive a lot doing service calls it seems I am never more than 1 or 2 miles from a "fix".
Is this coffee obsession going on everywhere?
Coffee used to be a must for me.I had a thermos at all times.
I'm now trying to quit smoking, and the coffee seemed to be associated with that.I drink maybe 2or 3 cups a week if that now.On the other hand, cigarettes are proving to be harder to quit. But I'm trying.
Russell
I put the pot on before I shower. Once it is done I fill my cup (22oz.) then I fill my thermos with the rest. On week-ends I drink two pots.
Russell, you can do it. I smoked for 30 years and quit. I used welbutrin and continued coffee and a beer sometimes, (now I can do both with no urge for a cigarette) these were my weakest times.
I must say I had gotten to the point that (worried every time I had a chest pain) I wanted to quit.
Roger
Thanks for the encouragement Roger.
32 years for me. It's time.
Russell
ElectricAL
For those who are trying to quit smoking: GO MAN!! I quit in 1987 after 13 or so years of smoking (heavily... would rather smoke than eat kind of addiction). I can be somewhat fiercely competitive and was told that something that was only 1/30th of an ounce was kicking my butt... that seemed to make a difference in my perseverance and commitment to quit.
Also, I decided I wanted to be a 'non-smoker' not a 'quitter' so I changed the way I described my effort and began to envision myself 10- or 20- years down the road without cigarettes.
Next, I proposed a deal with my smoking co-worker (ok, ok, the cigarette was smoking and she was just the sucker on the other end...) I knew I'd have to be able to cope with other people smoking and not cave to the habit or I'd smoke for the remainder of my life. We agreed that early in my effort if things got tense for me, she'd smoke on my behalf... smoking by proxy... ahhh, that was a wonderful and effective way to satisfy that nerve-wracking edge of addiction-breaking that thwarts so many attempts. When she continued to smoke, I wasn't bothered by the fact that I was 'missing out' either. Even now if I've had a tense period of time, I'll wake from sleeping and realize that I was having a leisurely smoke in my dreams but there's no way I'd light up in reality!

Oh and BTW, you'd better not be too good looking either!
Well, there's not much chance of that in my case!
Ryan,
Sorry about not getting back for so long. Sometimes I forget where I post a message. My question about the four garages was brought about because I believe in the old BOCA codes, if you had 4 or less garages, it was considered a "private" garage. If you had 5 or more garages then it was considered a "public" garage and you went from a 1 or 2 hour fire rating to a 3 hour fire rated wall. Under the new International codes, there is no limit to the garages. ( I don't believe.)
There is a part two to this question and it has to do with Zoning. Some boards require 4 or less garages in a house only I was wondering if there was any connection between the two codes.
Hi Harold. Generally speaking, zoning is a VERY local thing. I don't know of any zoning regulations in my city that specifically address how many garages you have on your property, but there are zoning codes that limit how many structures are on a lot, how big they are in relation to the dwelling unit and how far apart they are.

Looks like Railway points-switching levers, Mean Gene.
Trumpy-- you hit it right on the head, those levers are for switching trains in southwest detroit, they are located in Delray Tower, one of the last, if not the last remaining switching tower in this area, its CSX owned, and the levers used to be connected directly to the switches by heavy steel cables, now they are connected to relays and then out to the track...as much as id love to be working on the equipment, i have a good friend who is an operator there for 30+ years, i was paying him a visit and rewrapped all the handles on the levers one night.

Looks a lot like a "CF-7", which were "Converted" F-7A full Carbody Units, Converted by Santa Fe Railroad beginning in the mid 1980's, continuing to the mid 1990's - and upto Y2K with Conversions with EMD (General Motors) GP-7, GP-9 and GP-20 Units (Cab Conversions and De-Turbocharging + a few RCE tweeks).
The Long Hood and "North American Cab", as viewed from the Engineer's side (such as your image), look very much like a Retired ATSF Model CF-7.
ATSF went through 3 Phases of Body Styles with the CF-7, and 2 Phases with the GP-7/9/20 Capital Rebuild Programs.

I can't help it, I was thinking about a calendar of ECN members, every month a strange location, like this, and Marc and his train, I'd enjoy it! I'd buy it too!

Attic Rat,
its not as bad as it looks in there, but i tell you what our welder really had fun welding our conduit supports.
Here are a few shots, which should easilly cause you to run away from the Monitor yelling for help!
Once again, they are taken in the Cab of Diesel-Electric Locomotives, with me being at the Engineer's Control Panel.
The first shot shows the older - or
"Legacy" type of Control Panel configuration, whereas the third one is the more current
"Late 80's-1990's" configuration for Engineer's Locomotive Controls.
Image #1:
Me at the Engineer's Locomotive Controls ("Legacy" type), taken inside Union Pacific #2233.
This Unit type is an SD60, made by GM/EMD (General Motors/Electro-Motive Division).
Next Image (#2) is what the Locomotive looks like.
Image #2:
Front-Engineer's side of SD60 #2233.
Image #3:
Me at the Locomotive Controls for an SD60-M, which has the more current "Late 80's - 1990's" configuration, taken inside of U.P. #6101.
Next Image (#4) is what this Locomotive looks like.
Image #4:
Front-Engineer's side of SD60-M #6101.
Notice the drammatic difference in how this Locomotive's Cab looks, compared to the "Conventional Cab" of #2233, GM/EMD Model SD60.
The SD60-M #6101 has the "North American Cab" version

Anyone else care to submit a picture?.
Here's the only pic of me available just now. This is some of the parts of a 1954 Dale D.18.DBM single phase generator I'm restoring. Just realising what I've taken on again. The pic is taken at the farm with the dodgy wiring pictured in 'photo's submitted for discussion' board.
Plenty more pics of the Dale are available if anyone is interested.

Mike, you can if you have it already uploaded somewhere such as say Webshots, Photobucket, or a Website somewhere.

Randy,
Cool post mate.
She's absolutely adorable.
That facial expression looks like that of my Boss after I told him I was leaving, minus the broken gas-lift chair!.
Hi Trumpy:
It's a Rodgers Alexandria 820 - Electronic with two ranks of pipes. Our church bought it back in 1984 after a Yamaha electronic experienced a fairly exciting failure during a church service - started making bad noises all by itself (not from me), followed by a little smoke, and finally a short circuit which also took out part of the sanctuary lights. I hate to say this, but the breaker panel in the church is an FPE - I'm sure glad it worked on this occasion
. The Rodgers has been a good organ and very reliable, with only a few "down" times, some of which I have been able to fix, and others requiring a professional organ serviceman from Houston.
Randy: My congratulations, too. As my father would say, "She's a keeper". It's good that the little ones grow up to be so proud of their daddies (and mommies) and want to do what they do. Keep the Kleins handy!

This picture is me taken about a month ago on a job in Bayonne, New Jersey. As you can see I was wiring up a 3-family meter stack as part of a townhouse developement. The PVC pipes coming up look like crap because of the way the GC layed out the pipes under the foundation. He did the pipe runs because he insisted my boss charges too much to do it ourselves so what we have is a crappy looking service that'll look that way forever. Believe me, I tried my damnedest to make them look good.

Bump, ....cuz it's been a while
Niko/Edward's pic from May 16 is absolutely illustrative of the work my sparky used to do, right down to the tie wraps. He almost blinded himself once, trying to make the wires pretty for a fussy client; needle-nose slipped and hit the buss. He caught a flash and sat there blind for a couple hours (working alone, unfortunately). One side of the needle-nose melted down about half an inch.
He's out of the business now, just got sick of all the customer and contractor nonsense.
