Just a personal opinion!

New Member signs on to the ECN board and begins to ask questions, and gets answers very quickly!

No Name, No Email, No Nothing!!

Example Today's date 02-20-2003

Status: New Member
Total Posts: 1
Current Email: Not available.
Homepage: http://
Occupation: Homeowner
Location: Seattle, WA
Interests: Electrical

I don't like it this way.

I hope others agree, or at least come up with some solution.

Nicknames are OK but ..... don't hide behind them please, and don't be offended please .....!

Many people don't want their e-mail address posted. Doing so causes a large increase in spam.

Don:

You are correct. I use earthlink spaminator, and it helps to catch the spam I receive everyday.

This is a major problem and it looks like we cannot control it unless we load software to guard against the unwanted messages.

One of the first things I do when I sign on is to delete the stored spam messages that were caught by the spaminator.

I sometimes want to reply to those from the nigerian republic of fondu and futtter with a very harsh comments, but know if I do it would be like cutting my throat!

My profile says "Member" now (cool! although I really am still a newbie) but I have no problem putting my stuff up. Sure spam sucks, but at one point I worked for a website and got a few humbered e-mails a day. So if you don't want spam, get a yahoo or hotmail (or some other free e-mail host) and use it for ECN and spam hunting! It's worth it! [Linked Image]

I'm probably going to regret mentioning this, but I've listed my home e-mail as my listed e-mail here. It's that one, or my work e-mail, (I can't remember. I'll look after I've posted this [Linked Image]) and it goes to my home e-mail as well. But, except for a "friend" who put me on a porn e-mailing list, I don't get many spam e-mails at all.

Now watch, I'll start getting all sorts of junk e-mails.

Oh by the way, like Joe, I don't care for the "anonymously" registered posters here or any of the other forums I participate in. I'm not even a fan of "nicks" or "handles" instead of poster's names. But they have their names and locations on their profiles at least.

your going to have the occasional fly by poster on any BB, and the registration alludes to a nick.

just accept it, and be polite about it.

Keith,

What does jbfan stand for. If it means what I think it does we might have a lot in common. Well at least one thing. Oh yeah, welcome to the board.

Hi Everyone!

I too have been lurking on the sidelines...... Just haven't had the two cents to throw in yet!
I do enjoy the learning and reminders I have read here and check the board several times a day usually.
I've been in the trades over 30 years and a sparky since the '86 NEC.
I will be taking the ESI/BI test here in Ohio in June to be certified as an Electrical inspector and a Building inspector. If anyone should have advice or comments, I would appreciate your input.

Keep up the great work guys!
Thanks,
Dave

Scotts. What do you think it stands for? Yes I am a pirate, 200 yearts too late, the cannons don't thunder, there's nothing to plunder, I'm an over 40 victim of fate!

Joe,
That's unreal, about the Spam excuse, when I first logged on to ECN, I was getting Spam by the hour, mate, since then, it seems to have just gone away.
Although I don't think that ECN is an elixier, for SPAM.
One thing I do know, Joe, a big warm welcome to all New Members. [Linked Image] [Linked Image] [Linked Image]

Thank You.

There has been absolutely no one that has complained about an increase in spam because they were registered at this Forum. I don't like when this subject comes up because it is speculation and does nothing towards encouraging new members to join.

Unless the crafty spammers have circumvented it, one can post one's email with (at) instead of @ and (dot) instead of . and the spam bots will think it is ordinary text.

Like this:

vkkelly(at)stargate(dot)net
=
vkkelly@stargate.net

Plus adding spaces like Joe did in another thread will render the code useless to spambots.

Example: v k k e l l y @ s t a r g a t e . n e t

Virgil,

I don't think that Spam-bots would work here because email addresses are not visible nor are they in any hyperlinks. Places (other Forums) where they are visible may be another story.
