Attended the organizational meeting Fri. P.M. Met for 6 hours Sat. County politicos have vast resources in that they can use county employees for research. Some of the items brought up:
1. Over 900 political subdivisions have accepted the NEC with modifications.
2. The dominant accepted NEC is the 1996.
3. There are actually some that accepted both the NEC and the ICCEC with the same ordinance.
4. The modifications that are most prevalent are concerning the use of GFCI's and NM. Many, many small, and some large, political subdivisions reject the requirement of garage and basement GFCI's.
That is only the tip of the iceberg.
With the differences brought up, I wonder how active contractors fare when working in various jurisdictions?
I spoke, by telco, with an old friend this A.M. and he has given me some good advice. He said that I have always met a problem "head-on" but in dealing with this county group I should concentrate on a flanking maneuver. Get fire depts, insurance reps, lending institutions, anyone who has had a loss due to installations not conforming to code, etc.
The next 30 days are going to be interesting. BTW, I do have one of the 5 members allied with me so I have to only convince one.

I am going to try for the 2002 NEC. If I can't get that, I'll drop back to 99 or even 96 just to get the NEC adopted by ordinance and try for upgrades later. I have to soft pedal a lot as I am in a rural area of southern IL that is pretty much controlled politically by farmers whose families have been on the land since the 1800's. A long campaign finally got 3 of the 8 county board members ousted at the last election. We now have at least 4 who are under 80 years old. I am nearing 71 so I can talk to them a bit as they won't listen to anyone under 60. We WILL have the NEC in this county.

Are they shooting for 100 and still in office like our Senile Senator from South Carolina? The only reason we (I used to live in SC) kept electing him was his seniority and committee chairman ship position. I believe his handlers were the ones really making the decisions for the last 20 years.

Are there new people moving into the county that have not yet gotten interested in local politics? I recently moved from a city in Texas that was controlled by the old families and was being repopulated by families moving from Dallas. The newcomers were just glad to get out of the big city and could care less how the powers to be spent their tax money and stuffed the pockets of the developers. Get the newcomers, if any, motivated. It is their county too.
