ECN Forum

All things permitting, I will be doing a Forum Upgrade sometime tonight. So, if you see a notice that the board is closed you will know what is going on.

Keep in mind that the Live Chat Area will be open as usual.

Upgrade Complete!

Not sure if any features have changed much, but please let me know if you Guys spot any problems.

Is there a way that I can turn off the "topic preview" pop-up window that appears when my mouse hovers on the list of topics?
I know that it's probably useful, but I find it just a bit distracting.
I looked in 'preferences' and don't see anything there.

Thanks

Thanks
ghost,

I thought the same thing when I first saw it. As far as I know there is no way to disable it on an individual basis. I hoped there would be.

Sometime in the near future there will (supposedly) be a new version that may be quite different. Maybe there will be more personal options.

(I don't know how that'll affect everything else though)

I tried that. It's way more annoying than the previews. frown

I've got no preference for the previews if they can't be turned off. Maybe we should set up a Poll and let majority decide.

What do you think?
Would a bigger delay be a good compromise?

It'd be more useful if the preview was for the first unread post, and skipped quotes.

You're probably right, but I don't think that will be possible here.

The Forum used to keep track of unread posts, but it may have been slowing things down, so it was turned off.

Last year around this time we had comments about this preview too. I managed to set a short delay to the preview feature and it seemed to more acceptable.

I just realized ( blush) that modification was overwritten with the latest update and I've set a 1/2 sec. delay. (I don't remember what I did last time)

Any better now? Longer? Shorter?

let me know,

Bill

Since the text in the pop-up is the same as the text that's already on the 'active topics' page for the post I don't see any benefit to it.

Also, since the title of the item is pretty good at describing what it's about, I can't see any advantage in making it display the original post either.

Looks like ECN doesn't crash Firefox anymore! grin That's an upgrade.

I'll agree with that. Maybe I can find a hack to disable the preview in that area.

If someone goes to the Forum Summary pages though it does give them some idea what a thread is about.

Bill:
As to the pop-up, I have to agree with Ghost.

As a side note, using my office PC, & IE, when the forum page starts up, the General Topics don't appear. It's OK here at Vo Tech, and at my home on the laptop & PC.

Vo Tech is Firefox, home is DSL with IE, if that's any help.

UPDATE: If it matters to anyone I was able to disable this on the 'Active Topics' page, where it served no purpose anyway.

If that changes anyone's opinion let me know.

On another Note:

Can anyone tell me if they Did (or Did Not) get an email from ECN Electrical Forums?
Subject = "Another Birthday for ECN Electrical Forum!"

I'm trying to figure out if we have a Bug that needs to be addressed. It supposedly affects the IM feature to some degree.

Anybody? Yes, No?

No Email.

No email for me either. I did get one with info about upgrading the website tho.

Bill,
I did get one about the upgrade.

It also seems that I did get one regarding the Birthday too, it just never came through from the server to my computer until yesterday.

Not sure why that was.

Anyhow, it seems things are working correctly at your end.

Bill,
I received 2 emails about ECN's Birthday.
They both went to my Bulk (Spam) Email folder.

Thanks Guys. I tried sending to the list a few times before I figured out that the Host was stopping the operation. So, my apologies if anyone got duplicates, They now have a limit per/hr on Emails which I wasn't aware of.

There's no way to automatically stagger the emails with the Forum program, so I finally went another way.

I did not get the email. As for the new format, i am split on it. Some times, it it nice, some time it gets in my way. This is especially true on my iPhone with its small screen. I can get use to it. Is the an option to shut it off for those who do not like it?
Posted By: Admin Re: Forum Upgrade - 11/03/09 05:22 AM
I'm told that the preview thingy will most likely be a personal option in the next major software update.

Be sure to vote in the Poll

Yeah nice Randy,
That'll shut down the Chat Room and cause a few other problems on this site.

BTW, mate, have you been having a Java problem lately?

{You just need more coffee- woah, who said that??} grin

What's odd though, is that I’ve been having major problems with screen freezing using the IE 6 browser since the last forum upgrade, basically rendering the site inaccessible, even though my IE 6 has all the current MS patches and updates installed. It could possibly be a Java issue, but don’t know for sure.
I’m wondering how many other members can’t use this forum anymore because of similar problems.

BTW: The only way I was able to use this site again was to install Firefox v3.5.4.
No more problems with screen freezing up. I think I will stick with Firefox now anyway.
