I need to buy a Christmas gift for my son-in-law who is going to school and doing his apprenticeship as an electrician. I want to buy him something useful for his trade. I have seen ads for ultrasonic and other electronic type measuring tools/tape measures. Is there something good for around $60 or at that price level are they too inferior. Thanks for any help.

hi suz!
in my opinion, the "stanley" model or the "lufkin" are pretty good, although i still dont completely trust them when needing a close, critical measurement. there is also a "laser-tape" out, dont remember the brand. saw it demonstrated at the big "orange" store. looked pretty neat. have you considered other "possibles"? if he's doing a lot of EMT or rigid conduit, one of the new laser-beam torpedo levels would be useful to him. also, what about the klein "10 in 1" tool? just about every electrician i know has one, or wants one.... [Linked Image] klein also has a new, compact heavy cable cutter that looks really good.
just some ideas.....a gift certificate at an electrical supply house is good too.(one that sells klein, ideal, and greenlee products).

merry Christmas!....... [Linked Image]
Thanks for the info. I went to the Klein site and now I am trying to choose between the Klein Tripsaver multi-tool

and the Leatherman Wave.

Do any of you electricians have a preference?

I personally would stay with the Leatherman. I have friends with the"wave" and they even wear it "Sunday-go-to-meeting".
