I've been looking on line for the evolution of the light bulb and a catalog of the different types and wondered if anyone happened to know of a handy source.
I've found out a few things, such as the number after the letter classification tells you the highest width in eighths, such as a T-8 is equal to 1", an A-19 is equal to 2 3/8's inches, but I thought there might be an all inclusive sight around.

I had pretty good luck at Bulbman.com
We got attached to the 15w sign bulbs with the S14 envelope. They really look good in any antique type accent light.
These seem to be the only guys who stock them.

Follow this link to GE's catalog, it shows lamp shapes, bases and even element shapes.

Gunther:
The Grainger catalog also has a lot of bulb 'info'

Also, Philips Lighting website may be helpful o you.

As far as the 'history' part...google 'Thomas Edison' for starters.

The letter indicates the type of bulb, the number is diamater in 1/8" increments. Additional letters may indicate type of filament, frosting, base type, distance from base to filament center, etc.

A few types off the top of my head:

A - standard "light bulb" style
G - Globe
PS - Pear shaped
T - Tubular
PAR - Parabolic Aluminized Reflector
R - Reflector
MR - Mirrored Reflector
