If anyone has any additional tips to add feel free to do so.

I have set up a Website for uploads of Electrical Photos ( www.Electrical-Photos.com ) where Members can create an Album of your own and/or add contributions to categories there. When a photo is uploaded there it is automatically resized into different sized photos and the file size is significantly reduced, making the pictures more 'Forum Friendly' and faster loading.

Here's some step-by-step info:

After registration you can choose to create an album by clicking on the 'My Albums' link on the left side top and then 'Create a New Album' on the next page, choose a name, description etc. etc.

After registration you can add comments to any existing photos, or upload your own. To upload you can either go to an Album you created or cliock the 'upload' link towards the top right of page:

[Linked Image from electrical-photos.com]

On the Upload screen (photo below) you can choose an existing category there to upload a photo to (ie Bad, Nostalgia, etc) and/or an Album of your own. Select up to 3 photos on your Computer to upload by using the Browse buttons. (current combined limit of 25MB), and you can add a general Title, Description & Keywords etc. if you choose, (These can also be added or changed later by you). Click the Upload/Submit button when done.

Note: A second Upload screen may come up giving you another chance to add some information about the photo(s) - click 'Process' when done.

To see the photos you can go to the Category that you put them in, or your Album.

If you'd like to post one of the photos to a Forum there are several ways to do that. If you go to that picture and click on the little icon to the right under where it says 'Linked Thumbnail' (see Arrow below) you will have 3 options in front of you:

[Linked Image from electrical-photos.com]

Left click in one of the boxes with your mouse and select copy. You can then paste that into a Forum post and the associated photo will appear.

Here's what they will do:

Choosing the first selection will produce a small linked thumbnail that will bring someone to that photo page if they click on it. This will give them the option to see a larger photo as well other photos within that Category or Album:

The Second Selection will produce a Medium sized image with the same Link:

The Last selection will just display the picture (no Link):

Feel free to make use of this, it is here for you. I just ask that photos uploaded are all in good taste, not Copyrighted by someone else - and Electrical Related.

BTW, if you feel the need, you have an option to add Watermarks to your own photos, but keep in mind that would be irreversible. You have a choice whether to allow others to comment (there) on your photos - or not.

If a Member wants to start a photo discussion thread on their own they can do so in one of the non-Photo Discussion areas and a Moderator will move it into one of the Photo areas if pictures from the Upload site ( www.Electrical-Photos.com ) are included.

Hi, Bill

I have uploaded quite a few photo's already on the electrical Galleries Website and it works great.

One question though, How do I put photo's already uploaded on the galleria into albums ?

It works when you add new photo's, because the Album box option appears, doesn't seem to appear for the existing ones.

Thanks, Raymond

Raymond,

I'm not sure if everyone sees the same options as I do, but there is an 'edit' button under each picture (icon 2nd row, left side - [Linked Image from electricalphotos.com] ) which seems to offer the option of copying it to another category or Album.

Hi Bill, I have uploaded 6 photo's under International NON US.
Somehow I'm unable to get the thumbnails the same as the uploaded photo's.
I changed two photo's but the thumbnails remain what they were ?
Does it have a time limit or so ?
Under the 33 kV reactors the SF switchgear is visible.

If you can help me out or just delete the last 6(7) photo's please, so I can re-upload them again with the correct info.

Thanks

I deleted the last pictures.

How did you end up with duplicates? I'm curious.

Thanks Bill, I'm as confused as you here, unless it happened around the same time as the server was shut down for maintenance when I uploaded those photo's.

I will re-upload those photo's again.
Thanks for sorting it out for me.

Kind regards from New Zealand

Guys,
May I throw my penny into the waters of this discussion?

One thing I have struck with uploading pictures from over here in New Zealand, is that the upload speeds are shambolic compared to other parts of the world.
An upload may actually time-out due to non-completion (as far as the server is concerned).
Clicking on the "Back" button in Internet Explorer or Firefox, will enable what is known as a POSTDATA window, you have no option but to click on OK, if you don't, you will lose any data put forth before that window.
That same POSTDATA window will also make sure that the data "gets through" it is a version of a Javascript, more often than not, it will double it's actions.

Unfortunately there isn't a lot you can do about it, apart from watch what you are doing when you upload pics.

Just my opinion.

When I see something like that happen (duplicates) I always think there's another bug I have to hunt down... frown

We also had a recent occurrance of duplicate comments being posted. I'll have to keep an eye on things over there.

On another note, do you guys like the new layout over there? I'm trying a 'Brighter' look and have moved some things around.

So there is no way for users to delete their own pictures, like after experimenting with the best way of transferring pictures from their photobucket account?
I tried a few weeks ago and managed to copy the thumbnails, but no the actual 800x600px pictures...

Ahh, I was wondering why the pics were so small.

The software makes the thumbnails itself. There's no need to upload them, just upload the pictures themselves.

I'll look into the deleting photos question and get back to you.

Update:

The move & delete functions were disabled due to a security risk. I've installed some updated files which should take care of that, so give it a try now and let me know of any problems. I look forward to seeing the larger images.

BTW, there is a magnifier now when the mouse hovers over photos that have a larger version. Not sure if I like that or not.... confused

Edit - nevermind the magnifier thing, it seemed to slow things down so it's been disabled. You can see the same detail by clicking on the pictures.

Oddly enough, there is a program that I have been using since I have been posting pics here, it is pretty basic,
but it will allow you to resize pics, crop bits out and darken/lighten the whole image.

If you want a copy of it, send me an e-mail, it will be sent as a .zip file.

Good point you made there Mike, The upload speeds from New Zealand are pathetically low and perhaps time-outs do occur because of that, and by using the BACK arrow on the screen errors may occur then.

Bill, I like the new lay out with the light blue headers.

Also I uploaded the photo's again, one at the time with no problems.

Thanks again for helping me out here.

Kind regards, Raymond

Actually I didn't intend to copy the thumbnails at all - here is what happened: I used the "Copy from URL" feature and pasted the URL of my Photobucket folder. Apparently the folder the user gets to see only contains thumbnails and hyper links to the real pictures which are stored in a different folder.

I had another weird hangup too - I tried rotating the pictures I took in portrait orientation using first Graphic Converter, a shareware tool and then when this didn't work Apple Preview. With both I got pictures that looked perfect on my computer, but were back to the original orientation once I uploaded them.
Posted By: Admin Re: Photo Upload Tutorial - 10/29/09 11:37 PM
Ahhhh....OK

I haven't tried either one of those operations, so I'm not sure what to recommend. I'll give the rotating a try later though if I get a chance.

Now that I can delete my pictures I can do some more experiments and find out what works. I did notice a subtle URL change as you open the picture alone, without the HTML page surrounding it, so shortening that URL might do the trick.

I figured I'd bring this to the top, as many may not have seen it.

The photo website is not as intuitive as I would like, suggestions are welcome.

There is an update which I hope to be installing soon, maybe that will help make it easier to navigate.

Bill:
I still have problems with posting pics, and it's very embarising that a new member seems to have it mastered.

Frustrated!
