I have a hallway light switch that is 20 feet away from a bedroom; therefore, I have to walk in the dark to reach the switch before illuminating the hallway. Is there a reference in the code for a required switch near the bedroom?

I do not believe you will find a requirement for a switch location. The only requirement I know of for a 3way switch is at the top and bottom of a stairway that has 6 or more risers.

The NFPA NEC Committee CMP-2 responsible for the rules related to the switches required by rules in 210.70, use the term "at the usual point of entry" when describing the requirements for illumination in certain areas, etc.

I am aware of some proposals that were sent in during one of the past code cycles, and I believe that the request was for the switch to be installed within 3 feet upon entry into a room, to avoid the hazards associated with dark areas, and possible tripping hazards.

Their rejection indicated that the location of switches was a design consideration.

I often cited the following rule from the NEC and thought that it could be applied in the situation described above.

"90.1 Purpose.
(A) Practical Safeguarding. The purpose of this Code is the practical safeguarding of persons and property from hazards arising from the use of electricity."

"110.3(A)(8) Other factors that contribute to the practical safeguarding of persons using or likely to come in contact with the equipment."
