Thanks to everyone for your help, The lights and sidewalk are the project I was working on when I joined the ECN looking for some information. The people here have been a great help for me to get this project working. I just want to say that the information given here has been right on!

The lamps are cast iron reproductions of turn of the century gas lamps. Metal Halide bulbs give us the white light we were looking for in this project.

I am glad that I found this forum.

Hotwire: I have no idea of the "official" light level, eg, the # of footcandles. Its probly something I should find out. I do know that with them all on, it's whacking bright. 2/3's of them shut off at midnight, and then it's comfortable. Our locomotive cabs are at the same height as the lights, and shine right in your eyes if we run a night train.
The cars are used everyday, and in the summertime, there is another set of them, and we have two trains running. See www.strasburgrailroad.com. (One of these days I will learn how to imbed a link.)

Actually this is just one "phase" of the project, on the supply side of the lights there is a brand new 600amp 480 volt service, (I-Line w/main disco) 200amp 480 subpanel,75kva 3ph xfrmr to a 240 3ph panel to feed the train when it's plugged in at night, and a 480 feed out to a remote outside xfrmr to feed the business car we have, and another feed to the private car that lives here. Seems like there is miles of conduit in the ground.

It's been a fun project.
