I have a new home that I am wiring and I would Like to know if anyone could tell me if a smoke detector is required at/in or around the intrance to the upstairs room. I beleive they call it an rec or game room. It is not a bedroom. The upstairs room does have a half bath. Of course it proably could be turned into one very easily.Also what art is it refered to. Your comments are appriciated.

Wayne;
it's probably in NFPA 72 , i have a copy, but local juristiction usually applies heavily.

from a practical, not code , standpoint..heat and smoke do tend to rise...

BOCA requires in R2 and R3 (I think) a smoke detector in;
1) bedrooms
2)adjacent to the bedrooms(my fire battallion chief says 5 to 10 feet is adjacent)
3)One on each floor.

Hardwired, interconnected, and battery backup.

Check your building codes about smoke detectors.

Wayne,

In my area a smoke detector would be required inside and outside the room interconnected with the others. No code sections to quote, It is the opinion of the local AHJ that if it could be a bedroom it should be treated as such in this regard.
