I am trying to install an ABOVE GROUND POOL where only 1-2" of ground will be removed for leveling. After Having Ms Utility spray found out underground electric service cable runs thru middle of yard. Pool company states to contact local power company who states line must be moved at my cost. Pool companies state that pool is above ground and only 1-2" taken off and Electric company just trying to scare you to make money. Is there a reference for the state of VA. What could possible be dangerous in this?

sk,

The NEC states in 680.10 that
Quote
Underground wiring shall not be permitted under the pool or within the area extending 1.5m (5 ft.) horizontally from the inside wall of the pool unless this wiring is necessary to supply pool equipment permitted by this article

Thanks Bill for the info. I am still searching for where the cable should be buried anyway? Why the heck do they run the line right smack thru the middle of the yard and why should I have to pay 35% of the pool cost in moving the line? I am just angry.

skcseod,

There are many areas by me with what we call 'backyard services' but they are overhead. Many times a pool or service must be moved to satisfy codes and provide more safety. It's not something that everyone is aware of.
