Looks as though these old light fittings have been out of use for a while, but it seems somebody thought that the old conduit would be ideal to run flexible cord as semi-permanent wiring.

I couldn't reach the boxes to investigate further (and I was already getting some strange looks from people!), but the first pic looks like it might be a standard weatherproofed outlet which is being fed via the flex from the outlet in the second photo.

There are the remains of a third light between the two pictured, with the flex just running straight through.

There's a second flex lashed up to the old conduit, but I couldn't make out where the end disappears to by the light.
