I'm a small contractor in Northen Virginia only 5 technicians and I'm serioiusly considering joining a local union. Our focus right now, is new home construction and a service department. It seems to be a good concept considering the number of benefits for me and my employees.
Other than additional costs (i.e. health ins, retirement, training, etc...) can anyone advise what disadvantages (if any) there may be? Has anyone else found this to be a useful way to grow your business? It seems to me a number of opportunities would open up.

Ahhh...you must be new here. This is an issue that the moderators have decided can't be discussed openly. However, there are plenty of people who can help you but it must be done via personal email.

OK, let me explain. I think this is an issue we should be able to discuss without a flame war erupting.
Maybe I'm overly optimistic but it is possible to discuss this, pointing out the pros and cons of both sides for the benefit of all.
This is an important issue and an open forum is a good place to discuss it. I just don't think this should be swept under the rug every time it pops up.

If it does go Email can you CC me too? I'd love to hear the pros and cons. I have a particular point of view, but it is a totally uninformed view. I would consider it too, but I know so little about running an union shop, and I don't trust the BA's to give me the full story.

I agree but for some reason union members take criticism personally.
I'm non-union and have very mixed feelings about the IBEW. There are good points and bad points and it's possible some of the problems I see are isolated to the local here but that's all I have to go by.
