Ran three #4 rhw-2 direct burial cables to a small panel w/2 slots for branch cir. I used 1 hot 1 neu. 1 ground. Separated N and grounding wires.Since only had L1 I jumped it to L2.Is there any code reference to this practice. And also just for info If you use a three phase motor starter on single phase and use all three contacts is this ok.Reason I ask is we wired a paint both it had all three phase cont. w/all contacts being used. What they did was L1 came in through to T1 then jumped back toL2 then t2 and t3 went to motors.L2 came in to L3,Thanks for any code ref #`s I`ll go read.

Some motor starter manufacturers require all three overload heaters to be installed and carrying current to maintain the ambient temperature inside the overload relay that it was calibrated for.

Verify that the starter's labeled horsepower rating is suitable/adequate for the served motor. For some starter sizes, this number is often lower than its rating for a given voltage.

How did you jump L1 to L2??? If you have two conductors in/under 1 lug, that is a code violation, unless the lug is listed for 2 conductors.

It has lugs out at bottom of panel so L1 goes in at top Jumper goes at bottom of bus bar on the two out lugs.Thats why I ask Is there a violation?I can just leave the jumper off, only have 1 lighting cir on panel. The panel is really over kill but she had it and the larger wire will allow future circuits. When I said barn its more of a shed type not very big.
