I need to install a disconnect in very limited space for for a 4.5 KW water heater.
Any recommendations for a small footprint disconnect.

4500 / 240 = 18.75 amps.

How about a 30 amp rated two pole switch, it will fit in a single gang box.

That would work except the switch is going to be mounted under a vanity and I'm afraid a standard toggle switch might be inadvertantly turned off as items are placed under there for storage. For that reason I was leaning towards a pull out disconnect.

You could install a WP single receptacle cover on the switch to protect it.

The smallest 30 A disconnect I have seen is roughly 6"wide by 6" high and around 3" thick.

Your best bet is the toggle switch with an off the shelf W/P cover like caselec suggested, I don't think you can get any smaller than that. If you want to get fancy try one of these

Or one of these should do the trick: http://www.improvementscatalog.com/Parent.asp?product=158489x&dept%5Fid=0&subdept%5Fid=40

Thanks for your input.

Still trying to figure out what part of the code these "steam units" fall under. See the code forum.

424 requires:
Disconnect within site of equipment or controler, and in some cases be able to locked open.

And 427 requires:
"disconnecting means shall be of the indicating type and shall be provided with a positive lockout in the “off” position."

Sounds like either way it may need to able to locked open.... Then again I have always done them with a lockable fusable disconnect switch, when I thought they were under a different code....

Hmm, interesting. I was thinking that it just fell under the same category as a water heater, i.e. an appliance (422)
