Two of these I bought, two of these my wife's grandfather left me when he passed on. Guess which are the ones he left me [Linked Image]

Has anyone here used one of these dinosaurs? The one on the left has a sort of spring on the shoe that seems very strange. Please enlighten me. BTW: I beleive these are made by Benfield.

I will take the hickey on the far right off your hands.

Very handy for working RMC IMC that is in a trench or stub ups in a concrete slabs that need a little straightening.

The other old bender looks like the movable "hook" might be more of a pain (pinch point) than a help.

Welcome back

Bob

Welcome back

Thanks!!!...I had a great time!

I 've never tried to bend with the one on the left, but I think your right, it looks like a PITA to use! [Linked Image]

The one on the left is strictly a rigid (probably work on IMC) hickey. You don't bend rigid in one shot with these fellas but "walk" it up the conduit, the spring made it easier to move up that way... you mean they don't still make them??????? geez, I'm heading to e-bay [Linked Image]

The other old one will work on emt, but it looks as if it were made prior to that era, same thing applies about the movable front shoe in case you wanna make a 2 or 3 shot bend.

Early 70's, y'all check your ancient code books, EMT is ONLY allowed in up to 2". None of us used that 'junque' in those days, it just looked sloppy, so the one shots like your blue handled benders were kinda rare.

I think your right, George. The one on the left says 1/2" and the one on the right says 3/4". I had a piece of EMT about 3 feet long in the garage and it fits in the one on the left, but is way too small for the one on the right. They must be strictly for rigid.

BTW: I tried bending the EMT with the springy one and kinked the h*ll out of it!!! [Linked Image]

The blue one at the top is for making dumplings in, I don't think it's big enough to cook enough sour mash to do anything with. [Linked Image].

Glad to hear you had a good time.

Don't you just love it when tools do that!.
I've got a 1 1/4" Conduit Spring that does the exact same thing!. [Linked Image]

It's been a long 'ol time since I have seen or used a Hickey!
Seen and used a few of those Benders with the slip covers - but this also was Moons ago!

As to the newer Benders (look like Ideal???), they are 30° types, which I personally prefer for most work.
(offset is at 30° when Bender Handle is straight up).

Ryan;
(per the newer and bluer Benders)
On these, to find center mark point of Bend Beginning (for 3-point bends, or center line bend point for Saddles), bend a piece of conduit to a full 30°, look on the Bender's head about 2" back from the front hook, you will see two notches across the top lip on both sides (for ½" EMT Benders it's about 2" back, more for ¾" Bender Heads).
The Bend beginning center line on the bent Conduit should fall between the notches. Mark this point where the bend on the Conduit actually begins, for future reference.

When Bending 3-points or Saddles, place your "Bend Here" marks on the Conduit at that reference.

Just a little FYI!
