The major difference beetween GFCI personnel protection and AFCI protection is that AFCI protection is needed for the entire length of the circuit (including behind the walls.) GFCI on the other hand is only needed where people, electricity and a ground path (generally water) can come in contact. According to NFPA statistics, 36% of electrical system fires start in the zone between the panel and teh receptacle.
