Well, I have my first customer inquiry into home automation (for control of lights in a huge 4 room basement finishing project).
I do a lot of process control instrumentation & VFD installation & configuration, so I think I'd be OK with a simple system like X-10.
But I am a little apprehensive about my first time with it.
Any comments would be appreciated.

I have used some Leviton Home Controls in a few homes which operates using X-10 technology with great success. I used them to control outside and inside lighting and outside and inside receptacles for holiday lights. All were old work applications.
One of the customers said that they couldn't understand why everyone dosen't have one of these systems.
The oldest system is about 4 years old and not one call back.
I wouldn't hesitate to use or reccomend the system again.

It seems like this page is geared more to gizmo freaks and people with a high tolerance to banner spam and pop-up garbage, but there is http://www.x10.com/homepage.htm

I am vaguely familiar with the lutron Radio RA system. Will be installing one in a 12,000 sq foot house soon. Very expensive.

Redsy,

I have been installing home automation since 1996. X-10 is cheap and works okay, but it has a slow response to commands. The advantage to X-10 is you can retrofit any home with it just by changing switches. I prefer SwitchLinc products over Leviton and X-10 brands. SwitchLinc and Leviton products can be purchased from http://www.smarthomepro.com

The Lutron Radio RA system is expensive and proprietary. An integrated system is the best way if the customer is willing to spend the money. I have installed several integrated systems in homes over 6,000 s.f. using the Aegis system. http://www.aegishome.com

Check out http://www.homeautomationindex.com for more information.
