I need some help with this one. If you have a closet that is 24" deep can you install a light in there? I've read the codes and it gets a little confusing. If you use a dome covered pullchain, you have to be 12" from the egde of the self (the selfs are usually 12") and 6" from the other wall. You will need a 36" Closet to do this. A can light can be 6" from edge so with that you need a 30" closet. Am I just messing this all up or am I right, b/c all of the prints I get have 24" closets with lights in them.

If your closet is only 24" deep you will need to use recessed.
And the edge of the recessed fixture toward the rear has to be 18" from the rear wall.
And the shelf if any must be 6" from the edge of the fixture.
That doesn't address the 6' or hight of hanger rod off the floor.

Install a covered fluorescant fixture over the door and your covered. Very nice light and if you want a pull chain it will be right by the door. If you have Menards by you they have a fluorescant just for that with a pull chain. Ron

410.8(D)(2)seems to allow it. I think you're right Ron.
My Charles Miller disagrees but who's he?

The fluorescent doesn't have to be covered if it's 6" from the storage space but I would recommend that it is, 410.8(D)(2).

George, Flourescents have to be 6" from from the storage area whether it is covered or not.

GTE- I agree and my wording was poor so I appreciate the clarification. Could also be noted that the storage space below the shelf is often times larger than above the shelf and the clearances apply here too.

how wide is the closet? keep in mind 410.8 says storage space is the sides & back wall, a 12" shelf is figured on sides & back wall even if no shelfs are installed, you must also take the side walls into consideration also.

So if there is no self in the closet, can the light be in the middle of a 24" closet? Or do you have to assume that one day someone can put in a self.
