Actually SolarPowered, We had some about three weeks ago, (Wive says she saw some out near the Faralones last week) I live up on the hill by Sutro Tower in SF, and occasionally I get to see what most others dont without a good veiw. A little lightning, and ALOT of transformer explosions and highside fuse drop-outs.

I used to see them better at my old house on Potrero Hill. Most of our limited amount of lightning hits Sutro Tower. Not very much, but alot more than one might think. Maybe one or two strikes during a big storm, and you know how often that is. (2-5 times a year, only during the winter)

The fuse and transformer explosions are real exciting. Big flash, then the Mission goes out, then a big boom, as a report. Then it will re-connect, for the same effect, and sometimes take out Noe Valley with it.

Anyway, "the blind-copycat boilerplate does not call for 4/0AWG seven-strand or does it?" Why yes it did! I asked the EE, and he says, "Oh don't worry 'bout that..." So now I am back to 1/0 to the main.

And thanks to all who responded with info about this question. Still think its over-kill.

This is Sutro Tower, for those not in the area, not a good picture, as it is at night, with a full moon in the backround. But it is that big thing that looks likeit ought to be in a Godzilla movie.

e57, I stand corrected on the T-storms. I must have just thought it was a business transaction in East Palo Alto. [Linked Image]
