Hi,
Is it not allowable to use an unisulated neutral in the portion of the sec's that are overhead or undeground?

I have a 200A 120/240 VAC Main Panel mounted on a pole..the feeder from the 200A main to the house is a 4/0 3 COND AL URD...2 insulated and one bare conductor (neut). w/ground rod at house..As far as I know this is a legal installation isn't it?

an insulated neutral is only required past the first OCPD EXCEPT where feed from a separate location like another building or pole?

i am getting old...so my memory is not working as good as it used to..

as long as the underground AL conductor meets the requirements of 230-30 EX.(D), I'd say yes, but I wouldn't put AL in the ground bare. What kind of URD is this? all the stuff I use has an insulated nuetral.

thanks for the reply. The cable looks as if it is a TRIPLEX that has been placed in the ground. I called it URD but I bet it is a TRI-PLEX XLPE.

I am planning to replace the feeder with a insulated neutral using URD (insulated neutral marked with yellow stripe).

I have seen the results of placing AL in direct contact with the earth...you end up with a white powder that loses continuity...

i inherited the job from the HO's cousin..

it looks like a 1st year apprentice took on more than he could chew..
