Proposal 3-45 in the 2001 ROP asked to add the words; "Horizontally bored service laterals shall be exempt from this requirement" to 300-5(d). Code making panel 3 rejected this proposal with the comment; " Present language only addresses trenching and not boring, thus boring is already excluded from the ribbon requirement".

What little directional drilling experience I have tells me that,as txsparky says this would probably require 2 bores to install the warning tape. This would probably make drilling a lateral too expensive as opposed to an open ditch.In some cases that is.

A service lateral here in SoCA is not under NEC's jurisidiction, but that of the utility.
SCE inspects them, and it's got nothing to do with the municipal inspectors.

Electure,I suspect that it's that way in a lot of states. I know that my son has drilled in a lot of laterals in Ga.and S.C.and poco inspectors were the only ones involved.
