So this must be why some kitchens in Germany have 400Y/230V 3ø service?

You guys have us beat by miles on this one. It's hard to find a kitchen here served by more than 3 to 4 circuits:

1. 5A lights
2. 30A range
3. 30A ring for recepts.
(and that's likely shared with the rest of the house).

There might be an extra one for a washer or dryer, but the odds are against it. [Linked Image]

I think the most I've installed in a kitchen is 6 ccts: Three as above, plus dedicated branches for washer, dryer, and dishwasher.

BJ,
A lot of Continental Europe has 3-phase ranges to distribute the load. I don't know about Germany, but in France it's not unusual to find a 3-ph supply with main fuses or C/B of only 20A per phase.

paul, Americans have a penchant for 3AM teevee ads hawking through-current hot-dog cookers and triboelectric pickle experiments, so of course there’s: http://www.voltnet.com/cook/index.html
only to be countered with... http://members.iinet.net.au/~rmine/gctrebs.html

”The Presto HotDogger® electric hot dog cooker made great hot dogs in seconds, without water or open heat.”
Laboratory dog cooker http://www.pha.jhu.edu/facilities/pir/demos/demo_html227.html

This one is preceded by a listing for KIRCHOFF'S LAWS http://www.physics.umd.edu/deptinfo/facilities/lecdem/k6-23.htm

“An electric hot-dog cooker caused the most comment from incredulous browsers. "What in the world is that?" everyone asked. It looked like a tiny electrified version of a medieval torture rack.”

You guys run into the GE Advantium Microwave ovens at all. 30A 240V 4 wire receptacle for these suckers. Not a warm and fuzzy feeling when you show up to do finish work and they spring this one on you. It has happened to me a couple of times, so I make it a very clear point from the start, let me know BEFORE I start the work.

In ten minutes time you will either be enjoying the taste of freshly made griddlecakes, or explaining to the fire department how you burned your house to the ground

Hehe.... Love it! [Linked Image] [Linked Image]

I have a friend who said that while with the services in Germany he used to cook steak by sandwiching it between two metal oven trays connected to 220V.

P.S. Anyone care to bet as to when these Hot Dog Cookers and other gadgets will appear in the Sears & JC Penney catalogs??!! [Linked Image]
