Hi Comisc,

You didn't say what location you are in. The first thing comes to my mind is you home owners policy. CHECK IT. I know here in NC If (God forbid) you did do this work, even in accordance within the LHJ and something went wrong,( Fire ) your insurance is Void.
Sometime we can over look something minute.

Thanks for all the advice. I think I'm just going to find a licensed electrian o do the work so I don't have to worry about voiding my insurance.

Where can I find a reliable electrician that won't put a hole in my wallet around here in chicago?

that is debatable. however, you could help yourself by detailing your electrical needs on a plan.

submit the plan to 2 or 3 reputable electricians, you'll be getting an oranges to oranges estimate.
