In my area we usually call them hold-its. It could be some sort of a name brand for box support????

A contractor I once worked for had every catalogue number memorized and that's what he called the materials!

"Hand me that PT70-M" (barrell crimp)
"Give me that CXW" (2-1/8" Deep 1 Gang metal box)
"We need a box of 5320's " (duplex receptacles)

Drove me nuts for awhile, but now I see why you tend to remember them that way after a few years!
