I had a "Gimmee" 3p 3hp gould pump I used on my spa up north for a while but it ran pretty hot and I assumed the power I was wasting could pay for a good high E pump fairly quickly.
I think I had something around 11-12ufd in there. I did try a number of them trying to get as balanced a load on each phase as I could at normal running load. I had a box of 2ufd and 3ufd motor caps I was stringing together, tuning it in. In those days 3p motors were a dime a dozen in the computer fixit biz so lots of guys were trying to find a way to use them. There were several guys with 3/4 hp drill presses, grinders and such since that was a popular motor for disk drives, tape drives and printers.
