Had this question posted in the commercial sound forum by a member:

Any Massachusetts based contractors out there? I need to get a Low Voltage Licence and I'm getting the run around. I've called around and even googled and have gotten responses from What's That? to If you are already a licenced electrician you can just take the test. Can anybody clarify this? I have been doing installations for the past ten years and also have a background in both mechanical and electrical engineering.

I don't remember- does Mass have a LV licence? Can't find anything other than what looks like FA and security.

Mass. has class C (systems contractor) license and class D (systems technician license).

Class D you need 4000 hours work experience under a licensed Systems Technician and 300 hours of approved class work. Exam required.

Class C you need 2000 hours as a Systems Technician and 75 hours of approved class work. Exam required.

These licenses allow one to do fire and security wiring. I don't know for sure if you would be allowed to work on anything beyond that.

Continuing education required every three years.

Right, that's what I'm seeing. Question is do you need a license for data, telephone and sound wiring?

Actually I don't know.

My MA J-man covers me for all the work I do and I really do not do voice or data.

I don't believe that MA requires a license for either of those.

Don't worry. They'll figure out a way to license those. Gotta get those fees to keep the Central Artery repaired.
