The big thing around here is putting light rope tucked inside of crown molding on a tray ceiling. I had a customer ask about it and I told her I don't like it because of the ugly yellow color and the fact it doesn't put out much light. She wants some alternative suggestions.

What are some good altermatives to get a better effect. I was thinking maybe single lamp T8's with a dimming ballast. The tray will be a bout 16" deep on the bottom, so maybe 8-12" deep up top.

What have you guys done and how did it work out?

Juno Track 12 or halo simular but it can get costly once you add the transformer. I hate rope lighting too but you will never find an alternitive near it's low price. Here is all kinds:

I looked at the strip lights before but never installed them.

Twin City, have you installed those (in your link) before? Do I need to build a circuit out of components or is it all plug & play? (or a little of both?)

Try linear lighting from luciferlighting.com.
Navigate to "light strips" and then get the spec sheet for linear lighting. Very easy to install, dimmable, NOT CHEAP.

Yes, I have installed Luxeons before in marine, automobile and home applications. You can buy several different types of plug and play style circuit drivers/enclosures for these or build your own. Just Google them once. Phillips manufacturing makes Luxeon. They are the brightest LEDs available boasting a 100K hour life span (if properly heat-sinked). The backlighting application that you are looking at is a perfect apllication for the 1 watt Luxeon emitter. Use one of the "dimming" style drivers and space them about 10" apart. Without sounding too much like a salesman, I must say I beleive these are the future in lighting. The only problem right now is cost but, they are coming down in price every year. Cheapest I can find one "raw" 1 watt Lux. is at Future Electronics for $6.50 a piece. I've built 3 different portable work lights using these. One uses a 12 volt 7 amp hr. rechargable battery with 6 Luxeons. It is the perfect work flood light. It's very bright and lasts days without a charge. Every electrician who borrows it wants one. I am currently building one for a fellow sparky right now. Ok - I'll admit it, I'm a Luxeon freak. You will be too after you play with these for a while. John
