The "Wizards in Winter" display is currently the #1 topic on Snopes (absolutely the best urban legend debunking site):
http://www.snopes.com/photos/arts/xmaslights.asp

From the article:

Quote
This display was the work of Carson Williams of Mason, Ohio, who spent about three hours sequencing the 88 Light-O-Rama channels that control the 16,000 Christmas lights in his 2004 holiday lighting spectacular. The musical accompaniment is broadcast over a low-power radio station so that it is only audible to visitors tuned in to the correct frquency and doesn't disturb the neighbors.

Mr. Williams has made the lighting sequencer file and instructions available to anyone who wants to recreate this scene. See the link Doug provided just above. The actual sequencer file has a new home:

And the Light-O-Rama controllers are here:

Merry Christmas to all!

A fairly simple scheme for random and variable brightness Xmas lights on the tree, see my page http://pw2.netcom.com/~wa2ise/radios/xmassp.html

Here are some pictures of a house in England, I've had to take 4 pictures to get it all in.
The display isn't finished yet, Plans already in for next year (2006)
include a computer controlled light synced to sound display, can't give you a figure on the number of bulbs, was never counted.

Here's a follow up on that house has the music and dancing lights http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,178023,00.html

I do stand corrected. I thought it had to be a computer generated display.
