Hey A-Rat! I checked your profile to see if you had any other posts about losing stuff on jobs as this is what I've been going thru a lot this year...and I'm still LMAO at your list of interests.(Inhaling blown fiberglass dust, sweating, passing out) LOL, funny stuff! I've spent a lot of time in attics and so understand.

Working in an HOT attic one summer on a rehab job, just an ocean of the blown in pink stuff, and a tin-knocker was also up there working. We were sweating profusely. He was laid out on his belly stretching his arms out into the soffit trying to get a piece of duct put together with a transition down thru the eave and had a helper outdoor on a ladder trying to get it put together. It wasn't going well and he finally rolled over on his side in the pink stuff and moaned, almost crying. "I hate my job". Struck me so funny I never forgot it. Attics in summer aren't for the faint of heart.

Not sticking up for any stealing sleezballs but why was it left unlocked?

It's a sad fact of life in my area that it's either locked or stolen. We leave nothing unlocked and still we have gang boxes opened up and emptied.

Just a note for those of you that use gang boxes, check how the hinges are fastened to the box, believe me the thieves pay attention. A little time spent with a welder seems to help.

Nailed down, chained ???
If these guys are intent on taking something they will find a way to take it. I have a buddy that is proficient at picking just about any padlock there is.
He isn't one of the dirt-bags taking things, but you can imagine coming back to a site after a weekend and finding your gang-box just the way you left it on friday with one exception it is totally empty!!!!
Chaining things down ??
Have you ever seen a match involving a porta-band vs. a chain ???

Maybe you need a couple diamond backs in the gang box when you are not there.

Maybe keep a few well armed helpers in the gang box and when someone opens it up to steal....

And then hang em by the entrance as an example as to what happens to thieves.
It just goes to show that our society is too laxed when it comes to some crimes, we need to return to the good old days or even the ways of other cultures where if you are caught stealing you get your hands taken away. The consequences need to be upped so that people will think twice about thievery (is that a real word?).
