You do not have to retest to keep your Chicago license intact. Chicago's code is more in line with the NEC now....

You do not have to retest UNLESS you do not file so many permits in a certain period , You must do that to keep your License Active. Also Chicago at this time does not required update Schooling as several other states do. If you Plan to take the Chicago test Make sure you get a current in force copy of the Chicago Code.

As others here have said - make sure you're using the testing AHJ's version of the Code - North Chicago, for example, uses the '96 NEC, not the '02.

In addition, not all counties / municipalities offer testing, but usually all will reciprocate with those that do. There are some AHJ's that require you register - it's usally just a copy of your license and insurance certificate, plus a token ($1 - $25.00) fee.

From the Village of Streamwood website:

LIST OF ACCEPTED TESTING VILLAGES FOR ELECTRICIANS

1. Village of Buffalo Grove
2. City of Chicago
3. City of Elgin
4. City of Elmhurst
5. Village of Elmwood Park
6. City of Glenview
7. City of Naperville
8. City of North Chicago
9. City of Northlake
10. Village of Orland Park
11. Village of Schaumburg
12. City of Waukegan
13. City of Wood Dale
14. Village of Hinsdale
15. City of Woodstock

Of course, I get a kick out of the "kingdom" of Chicago being listed as a 'village', but that's just me. [Linked Image]

Good luck in your endeavors.
