I have been asked to do some 12kv and 4160v work.Distribution and motors.I have done some underground for utility companies but nothing this large.I need to know all I can to make sure it is done safley. Are there any tech guides or books or classes I can take for this application? Thanks.

Medium-voltage gear/cables have their own set of concerns.
  • Unique owner/facility requirements
    More interest/details by utility/AHJ than with <600V
    Splice/termination workmanship/quality
Differing cable specs/construction… industrial versus utility
    Cable overvoltage-testing procedures
    Installation/installed cable radius
    Cable-shield configuration/layout
Grounding electrode arrangement and size typically significantly greater than for <600v work
It may be possible to “farm out” splicing/termination labor to a specially contractor. [sparky*62 — Apologies for the delayed response.]

EC&M book store has a couple really good books dealing with High Voltage, We do a lot of HV work and I refer to them often.
Understanding NEC rules on Medium Voltage power systems Item # 7871
is one.

The IEEE Red Book — Standard 141-1993 Recommended Practice for Electric Power Distribution for Industrial Plants is a decent reference for medium-votlage work, but it costs. Search on “ 141-1993 ” at http://shop.ieee.org/store/
