Randy you need to be a little more specific.

The generator itself, the engine or how it ties into the building.

5000 watt portable or V12 Caterpillar?

I'm looking for a general hook up that most home owners request evryday. Any type of generator to the panel to the tranfer switch or switch panel combination. how each circuit is connected to both panels.

Depends on the system. You could get a panel with a manual transfer switch built in, it's a fance metal plate that slides back and forth between the main and the breaker used to back feed the panel from the generator.
