Paul,

We call the type of fan you describe simply an 'Exhaust Fan'

Over here (US) even in our areas where Licensing is required there is still an exception for homeowners to do some things within their own homes. They sometimes need to take a competancy exam, but generally not.

I see Licensing as helping to protect everyone. A homeowner that does their own work has the responsibility for the consequences, but what about the innocent (others living within the house) or the unsuspecting visitor, adjacent neighbors or next Homebuyer? Licensing and Competancy tests help protect them too.

Bill

If you have any digital photos of Electrical things done by 'Bodgers' (or even correctly) I'm sure that many would be interested in seeing them. You could send them to Me with Comments (Bill@Electrical-Contractor.net)

Now I come to think of it, I have seen the term "Exhaust fan" in American catalogs. Just one of many things which have only a subtle difference in wording, like the way the muffler on a car is called a silencer over here. There actually seem to be certain subjects which have the greatest difference in vocabulary - cars, food, and railroad words, for example.

The effect that somebody's dangerous work could have on innocent people who follow is probably the thing that would swing me most in favor of licensing.

Bill:
Sorry, I don't have a digital camera or a scanner for pictures, or I would have posted some already - one picture and a thousand words, etc.

Thanks for the "drum of bitter." Cheers!
