Just for fun!

Here is a quiz that is given to the summer league umpires in training.

To answer the questions, just reply to this post and indicate the question number and the "T" or "F".

Part 1
There are no trick questions.

According to the Major League Baseball Rule Book, Answer True or False

1. The batter-runner must turn to his right after over-running first base.

2. If the batter breaks his wrists when swinging, it's a strike.

3. If a batted ball hits the plate first it's a foul ball.

4. The batter cannot be called out for interference if he is in the batter's box.

5. The ball is dead on a foul-tip.

6. The batter may not switch batter's boxes after two strikes.

7. The batter who batted out of order is the person declared out.

If you would like to try the next 7 questions, let me know!

Dave

Hi Russ,

You are correct!

I like that site! Very useful for baseball fans and umps as well.

Please share a unique ump experience where the rules were mis-applied or one of your favorite memories.

Thanks,
Dave

Hi Dave:

I's sad, but true that most coaches don't really know the rules very well, after you get past the basics of the fundimental playing rules.
Just like code, the rules take some effort to learn. Most coaches just don't take, or have the time to figure it all out.
That never stops them from arguing rulings on the field. The newest coaches are the biggest offenders.

During this years 10 year old district tournament, I was the base umpire, when a interesting play happened.

Bases loaded, one out. Batter hit a ground ball to the shortstop. The ball got by the shortstop. I Think the ball hit the tip of his glove, atleast thats what it looked like to me.
(Wether it touched his glove or not would not have change my ruling.)
After the ball got by the shortstop it hit the edge of the runners shoe. It looked like he was trying to jump away from the ball as he ran past the fielder on his way to third.

I signaled the safe sign, because the runner did nothing wrong. He ended up safe at third.
The defensive coaches argued the runner should be out, because any runner hit by a batted ball should be out.

Thats not true.

RUNNER HIT BY BATTED BALL RULE
If a runner is hit by a fair batted ball while he is on fair territory, he is out and no judgment of intent is required unless he is hit by a deflected ball, or the ball has already passed all infielders, in which case the umpire must decide if he intended to be hit to interfere, obstruct, impede, hinder or confuse the defense.

Rule 509(f) 708(f)

Russ,

Good call.
I agree, coaches are (of course) going to argue any call that goes against them especially when they were not really watching the play!

A few years back, I had to make a simular call. Bases loaded, 2 outs. Batted grounder to short, runner passes between ball and short distracting short and short misses the ball. Second baseman fields ball and throws home to stop runners.
I called the runner out for obstruction, three outs.
The coach went nuts and the parents were backing him up. After about 5 minutes, everything settled down.
Result; Both coaches were issued a warning. Any more outbursts from either side of the field or from either coach could result in a forfeit.
The things parents will do because they don't understand the rules of the game are amazing!
