Don,

If a breaker is listed for use in another mfg.'s panel it was deemed to be compatible by a recognized authority
Breakers are only listed for use in panels of the same manufacturer. If they are to be used in other brands on panels, they are classified for that use, not listed.

Don (et al),

Thanks for the clarification. I happened to find this page - it provides a more detailed description of listing/classification.

I needed a breaker for a Crouse-Hinds panel, did a search, and found this thread.

As taken from a Cutler-Hammer .PDF document :
Specified Circuit Breaker – each
manufacturer lists the brands of circuit
breakers that can be used in their
panelboards. Often, manufacturers will
not list competitors as specified, even
though they are suitable replacements.
UL Classified Circuit Breaker – a
breaker that is considered suitable, by
Underwriters Laboratory, for use in
place of the specified circuit breaker.
Listed Breaker – According to the
NEC®, the listing of a product is by an
independent third party. Cutler-
Hammer Classified Breakers are listed
by UL.
Labeled Breaker - A breaker with a
label affixed by an independent third
party.

It's probably cheaper to just buy a Murray breaker for a Crouse-Hinds panel. Aren't they the replacement?

Murrray was the name of the Crouse- Hinds line before they bought them and the name is back since Siemens bought the line.

It seems to me that the so- called "interchangeable" circuit breakers need to be classified as such, or be made to be non interchangeable IMO.

Either the manufacturers need to s*** or get off the pot.

It appears that C-H has done just that (s***) with their CL line of breakers. Has anybody used them, and if so, how much are they?
